Welcome to the website of the Shorter College Athletic Hall of Fame. Its mission is to honor those participants in athletics who have made a major contribution, individually, in at least one major sport and have helped to bring recognition and prominence to the College. Shorter inducted its first class ever of players and coaches into the Hall of Fame on April 19, 2001, during Alumni Weekend.

Members

Bill Foster - Men's Basketball Coach/Athletic Director    1962-67

Came to Shorter College in 1962 and his teams posted 110 wins against only 33 losses the next 5 seasons. Built strong foundation for Shorter Athletics in the early 60's. Went on to national prominence as a head coach in the NCAA. Coached Clemson and Virginia Tech to the NCAA Tournament and won the NIT with Virginia Tech in 1995. Assistant Coach for USA basketball team at 1994 Goodwill Games. At retirement was one of only 16 coaches to win 500 or more games in his career.

 

Walt Attaway - Men's and Women's Tennis Coach

Long time men's and women's tennis coach. The winningest coach in NAIA history and 3 rd in wins all time in the NCAA or NAIA combined. Selected as Conference Coach of the Year 15 times during career. His teams have made 25 NAIA National Tennis tournament appearances. Elected to the NAIA Tennis Hall of Fame in 2001 and the Rome-Floyd County Hall of Fame in 2000. NAIA Men's Tennis Coach of the Year in 1999. Tireless worker and dedicated supporter of Shorter College and its athletic program. The Shorter Hawks tennis teams take pride in playing on the courts that are named for Coach Attaway.

 

Ada-Belle Patrick Winthrop-King - Women's Basketball 1918-1922

During her four years on The Hill she became quite a celebrity with her athletic ability and leadership. She was a Student Council member, Student Body President, Vice President of the Athletic Association and Captain of the Basketball Team. Her senior year she was selected "Most Prominent". Her commitment to Shorter did not end in 1922 as she became a long time generous supporter of the college. A foreign language lab bears her name as well as the Winthrop- King Centre the Hawks proudly call home. She forever has enriched the quality of life and learning that Shorter College can offer.

 

Jimmy Chastain - Men's Basketball 1963-67

Four year letterman for the Hawks. Member of 1965 GIAC Conference Champions. All-time career rebound leader with 1270 from '63-'67. NAIA Honorable Mention All American in 1965 and an All GIAC performer in 1965 and 1966. Pulled down 25 rebounds in one game during his career. His senior year he had 369 rebounds for an average of 11.9 per game and averaged 11.8 points per game.

 

Earle Driggers - Men's Basketball, track, cross country, baseball 1962-1966

Earned 16 Varsity letters in 4 years in basketball, track and field, cross country and baseball. Set records in career in one mile and two mile runs. Undefeated in cross country meets for three years. Earned All GIAC honors in baseball, track and field, cross country and basketball. Honorable Mention All American in basketball during '64-'65 season averaging 18 points and 8 rebounds a game. Scored 1,426 points in career and scored 39 points in a game during '64-'65 season as part of a conference championship team.

 

Gordon Guin - Men's Basketball

1961-63

Three year letterman for the Hawks. Holds highest career rebound average with 15.1 per game. Single season leader in rebounds with 17.5 per game during 1961-62 season as well as single season scoring average (25.9 points per game) and free throws made (184) during the '61-'62 season. During career was ranked in the top ten in the NAIA in field goal percentage, free throw percentage and rebounds. All GIAC performer in 1962 and '63. Led the entire GIAC in scoring an rebounding his senior year.

 

John Maddox - Track

1962-65

A top track and field performer for Shorter in the early 60's. Set GIAC Conference records in the 100 yard and 220 yard dash. Also set conference records in the high and low hurdles. Was voted the Most Valuable Member of the 1964 track team. Member of 1963 Conference Champions.

 

Shirley Knighton - Women's Basketball

1976-1979

Four-year letter winner for the Lady Hawks. All time single season scoring leader with 777 points during '77-'78 season. Scored 580 points in one season during '78-'79. Ranks 4 th all time individual career in free throw percentage at 74%. Ranks 1 st all time for single season filed goals made during 1977-78 season with 257. Captain of her team junior and senior year when the Lady Hawks posted 31 wins in '78 and 25 wins in '79. NAIA All American in '78 and '79. Averaged 21 points per game in career and ranks 2 nd in career points scored with 1853. Number 54 is retired and hangs in Winthrop-King Centre.

 

Lamar Wright - Baseball 1970-74

A four year letterman for the Hawks. Holds all time career wins mark with 45 against only 8 losses. 3 time All GIAC and District 25 Selection. All time career leader with 500 strikeouts. Lead NAIA in strikeouts with 172 in 1974. Two time All Area 5 pick and an NAIA All American selection in 1974. Drafted by the California Angels in 1974 and reached the AAA level with the Angels. His teams helped build strong foundation for Shorter baseball and was member of '71, '73 and '74 conference champions and '74 District 25 champions.

 

Robert Long - Baseball 1973-76

Three year letterman for the Hawks baseball team. Sophomore year was 8-2 with an ERA of 1.75 in 77 innings of work. 88 strikeouts against 21 walks and tossed 4 shutouts. An All GIAC and District 25 selection. Reached the Major Leagues with Seattle in 1981 and Pittsburgh in 1985. Helped lead the Hawks to 3 straight conference championships from '74-'76 and two District titles in 1974 and 1975.

 

 

Sonny Skinner - Men's Golf 1980-81

Won two tournaments in 1981 for the Hawks. Turned professional in 1982. Has two victories on the buy.com Tour by winning the 1993 NIKE Shreveport Open and the 1994 NIKE Dominion Open. Member of the PGA Tour in1997 and 98. While a member of PGA Tour fired an opening round 62, tying the Warwick Hills Golf & CC course record at 1997 Buick Open. Member of buy.com tour from 1993-96 and 1999- through 2001.

 

Pam Wortham - Women's Basketball 1979-83

Four year letter winner for the Lady Hawks. Selected to the GAIAW All Conference team all four years of career. Led the conference in steals and ranked in top ten in scoring as a freshman year. Led conference in scoring her junior and senior year. Voted Player of the Year in the GAIAW her senior year. Ranks 2nd all time career field goals made with 852 and 2nd all time in points scored for career with 1,976.

 

Dominik Boettcher - Men's Tennis 1989-93

A 4 time NAIA All-American selection. Posted over 100 victories in his career. Has the most wins ever by a Shorter College tennis player. Competed all four years at #1 singles. Posted 33 wins his freshman year and was ranked as high as #3 in the entire NAIA during his career. Numerous titles including District 25 singles champion in 1990. A four time All GIAC - All District 25 performer and four time NAIA All American selection. Member of '91 and '92 Conference and District Champions.

 

Lydy Pinson - Women's Tennis 1992-96

Became the first female tennis player to win 100 matches. NAIA All American Selection in 1995. Posted 40 wins as a freshman which is a single season record at Shorter. A four time All Conference performer. Ranked in the top 50 in the NAIA all four years. Helped lead the women's team to a Conference title in 1995.

 

Ibriham Ibriham   Men's Soccer 1960-1964

 

Was player coach for first ever men's soccer team at Shorter. Went on to become Head Men's soccer coach at Clemson University and helped build them in to NCAA power. Was selected among top students at Shorter by being a member of Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities in 1964.
